The Marketing Folk Approach to Being a CMO

In today’s business climate, the role of the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) is more important than ever before. The CMO is responsible for developing and executing the marketing strategy for the company. They are also responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the marketing department.

The Marketing Folk team has over 20 years of experience in marketing, and we have seen first-hand what separates the good CMOs from the great CMOs. If you are thinking about becoming a CMO or if you are already in the role, here are some things to keep in mind.

3 Tips for Being a Great CMO

Be Strategic

The most successful CMOs are strategic thinkers. They are able to take the data available to them and create a plan that will achieve the desired results. One way to be more strategic is to develop a deep understanding of your customer base. This understanding will allow you to create targeted campaigns that resonates with your customer’s needs and wants.

Another way to be more strategic is to focus on creating an omnichannel customer journey. This means that your customers should have a seamless experience regardless of which channel they are engaging with you on (e.g., social media, website, email, etc.). A final tip for being more strategic is to always be testing and measuring your campaigns so that you can learn what works and what doesn’t work. By constantly testing and refining your campaigns, you will be able to improve your results over time.

Be Passionate

The best CMOs are passionate about marketing and they have a genuine interest in their customers. Their passion drives them to continuously learn about new marketing trends and figure out how they can be applied to their business. Additionally, their passion motivates them to stay up-to-date on industry news so that they can identify any potential threats or opportunities for their business.

Being passionate about marketing also allows them to be better storytellers. They are able to craft compelling narratives that capture the attention of their target audience and persuade them to take action.

Lastly, their passion enables them to raise the bar for themselves and their team members by setting high standards and challenging themselves to constantly improve.  If you want to be a great CMO, it is essential that you have a passion for marketing.

Build a Strong Team

The most effective CMOs know that they cannot do everything themselves and they surround themselves with talented individuals who complement their skill set. They delegate tasks so that they can focus on the big picture while also giving their team members room to grow professionally. Creating a strong team also requires effective communication. The CMO must be able to clearly articulate their vision for the company’s marketing strategy so that their team can execute it flawlessly. Furthermore, they need to get everyone on the same page by regularly sharing updates on campaign progress, performance goals, budget restraints, etc. Lastly, the CMO must show appreciation for their team’s efforts because happy employees tend to be more productive employees. If you want to build a strong marketing team, it is important that you surround yourself with talented individuals, communicate effectively, and show appreciation for a job well done.
